Designing and building furniture with Alligator Juniper is fulfilling and challenging. It is a rare species found only in the desert forests of Arizona and New Mexico. No large equipment is allowed in these protected areas. The large trunks are slabbed on site with hand held chain saws. The branch that I used for this table was left unslabbed on one side and that’s what made it perfect for this project. Since I had an idea of constructing a table with a bowl carved into it, I needed a branch with the bark texture running in a certain direction. I used jewelry inlay techniques to inlay the turquoise and Apache Gold Vein stones in this piece. A bowl has been carved from the center and has the appearance of the head of a Bronco with free flowing mane represented by the rough bark. The tree that produced the branch for this table was approximately 500 years old. The finish on this piece is a hand rubbed oil and wax finish. |
